November 8 is Indigenous Veterans Day in Canada. The First Nations, Inuit and Métis people of Canada have a long and proud tradition of military service to our country, in times of war and peace. Thousands of Indigenous people have proudly served in uniform, and many Indigenous communities have also contributed to our country’s military efforts in other ways. Despite these contribution and the having to overcome obstacles to even enlist, Indigenous veterans have faced discrimination, including Métis veterans, and they were did receive the same benefits and reintegration support as other Canadians after the wars.
On Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour the service, the struggle, the courage, and the sacrifice of all who serve at home, around the world, and across generations. Indigenous Peoples in Canada have fought on the front line of every major battle Canada has been involved in, and they have done so with valour and distinction. Let us honour their contributions and acknowledge the unequal treatment that they received in return.
